SHEPHERD DOG

Image
« The thief comes to steal and kill and destroy »…                                                                         John 10, 10                                                A frightening thing tumbles down the mountain and sends flying clouds of dust. It’s like a hairy rocket with a smoldering look which slavers and shows fearsome teeth. It barks like a devil and jumps into the air, trying to eat us a...

LUCÍA FRANCIS OF ASSISI FELL IN LOVE WITH DAME POVERTY AND MARRIED HER Lucía’s age is that of the old women of the Bible. She’s all thin but quite tall. And beneath an exterior which does not cover properly her poverty, she still stands up straight like a tree. Nobody can believe that this so frail of a woman was before a tamer of horses. And a tireless dancer. Each year, around the feast of the Virgin of the Rosary, she would go running towards Mount Sixilera where the «Mamita» would wait for her. In the wee hours of the morning, the « misachico » would begin its long descent towards the village church. That hiking of wind, dust and blazing sun would last at least a good twelve hours, reaching sometimes such heights where people and even animals have a hard time breathing. All along the footpath o...

THE CRUCIFIX AT THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

Image
“He shall stand as a controversial sign” (Luke 2, 34) In the past, in the Québec province, the crucifix was king. It was a sign of belonging to the Church. It was venerated as the symbol of God’s love for humanity. « For God so loved us that he gave his only Son, not to condemn us but that we might be saved» (John 3:16-17). Nowadays, however, it cannot be found except in churches, religious houses and in some homes, and of course, in a few museums also. By virtue of a miracle for which politics only know the secret, the Blue room of the National Assembly has kept its crucifix. It is always hanging above the chair of the President of the Assembly. But far from bringing into unity the scattered Quebec people, it divides them into two camps which have a go at each other with the serenity of many cocks in the same hen house.      On the one hand, proponents of ...

THE “TWEAKS” + JEREMIAH AND THE STONES THAT SPEAK

Image
THE “TWEAKS” A big hurrah to my Argentinean grandson, Ezequiel Escobar, and his great Jujuy Tweaks! Thanks to the wonderful uSound application for cell phones that they have just so brilliantly invented. They are making the deaf hear and bring hope to millions of people. JEREMIAH AND THE STONES THAT SPEAK    Mark 7: 31-37 It was said about the people of Pilcara that they were mute as stones. On his arrival in that place, Jeremiah intended to change that situation  « because   I was sent to make the blind see, the deaf hear and the mute speak. »   This is how Jeremiah was speaking: For centuries, we were forced to keep silent. They would say to us:  « Shut up! Not a word about what you see, hear and think! To those who ask you something, you answer: «Yes boss, yes Ma’am, yes Monsignor.»   If they ask how are you, you always answer: « Fine ».   Nothing more. It’s simple: if you want to survive, do as if you were...

BREAD FROM HEAVEN AND THE COMMUNITY HORSE    This article wants to be a humble tribute to the many animators of small communities who threw themselves heart and soul into building a church with a human face and a gospel flavour,  but whose valiant efforts were very often wiped out because of the lack of courage of some of their pastors.        The small farmers of La Landa have been dreaming for a long time of forming a real christian community, that would be the good Lord’s pride. Modesto and his wife Nilda are the soul of that dream.   Today, Sunday, they are gathered in the chapel to share the Word while having a bite to eat around a table on which each family has deposited one home-made bread, empanadas, humitas, handfuls of coca leaves, Toro wine and soft drinks. Between two songs, Modesto comments on a passage of the gospel where Jesus in person appears as « the living bread coming from heaven. » (John 6: 5...

THE BALCONY OF ST. PETER

Image
From the chimney of the Sistine Chapel rises white smoke and the bells of St. Peter are pealing out. The Cardinal Protodeacon appears majestically at the balcony of the basilica and announces to the world that the Catholic Church has a new pope. But the name of the newly elected cannot be clearly heard. The procession cross then appears and behind it the silhouette of someone whose face, because of a problem with lighting, does not show clearly.  It seems that it can be detected that he does not wear the usual papal insignia, and maybe he is without even a Roman collar and the white skullcap. He is seen greeting with sweeping gestures the crowd which fills up St. Peter square, and in turn the crowd answers him back with deafening cheers, but also with large interrogation marks in the eyes. And so, who is that pope indeed? That pope with a vague contour carries a Bible in his hand, opens it and going near the microphones begins to read in a vibrant voice:  -...
